"If you go down to the woods today."......you'll have lots of fun just like us!
It was a rainy day but we wanted to be outdoors so I dressed the kids in their waterproof clothes and just like the mouse in Julia Donaldson's Gruffalo "we took a stroll through the deep dark wood".
Armed with a fantastic woodland spotter sheet from Nature Detective we went looking for woodland creatures. There is a page describing the types of leaves/trees you will see and it is great for little ones to identify what they have. In the words of my 4 year old "can we do this again tomorrow", it was certainly a HUGE hit. The rain stayed off for us and we were the only kids in the wood (big kids like me not included) My 1 year old just loved the jumping in muddy puddles and following her sister around while Erin enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and wouldn't leave until we had found almost everything on our sheet!

Erin's favourite things about the day:
- finding a snail (which we let go after taking him for "a walk" for 5 minutes along the path
- getting some sticky willy plants
- the sensory sheet where we had to write down all we had seen, smelt, heard, tasted (a few wee jelly sweets never went amiss) and touched.
All in all we were out for about 3 hours and we all slept really well that night but the best thing about it was the fact that we were outdoors, we all had a great time and it was FREE. The fun continued at home when we made a picture out of all the things we had found.
So head down to your nearest woods/forest today for some real outdoor fun with the kids, promise you will enjoy it just as much as they do.
